Types of Forklift Courses Explained: Counterbalance, Reach Truck and PPT
If you’re looking into forklift training for the first time, one of the first questions you’ll face is which course to go for. There are several types of forklift courses available, and the differences between them aren’t always obvious if you haven’t worked in the industry before.
This guide explains what each course involves, what kind of work each machine is used for, and how to work out which qualification makes the most sense for your situation.
Counterbalance forklift training
The counterbalance is the machine most people picture when they think of a forklift. It gets its name from the counterweight built into the rear of the truck, which balances the load being carried at the front.
Counterbalance forklifts are used across a wide range of environments – warehouses, distribution yards, manufacturing facilities, and construction sites. They handle tasks including loading and unloading vehicles, moving palletised goods, and shifting materials around a site. Because of that versatility, counterbalance certification is one of the most widely recognised qualifications in the industry.
For most people new to forklift operation, counterbalance training is the natural starting point. It builds a solid grounding in the core principles that apply across all types of forklift courses – load stability, pre-use inspection, operating limits – and provides a foundation to add further qualifications later.
Counterbalance trucks come in electric and LPG or diesel variants. Electric machines are common indoors. Larger powered machines tend to be used in outdoor or well-ventilated environments. Training covers the specific type of truck relevant to the course.
Reach truck training
Reach trucks are built for a specific job – working in narrow aisles with high racking. The forks extend forward independently of the body of the truck, allowing operators to place and retrieve loads at significant height without needing a wide operating space.
You’ll find reach trucks in large distribution centres and any warehouse where space efficiency is a priority. The work demands precision – placing loads accurately at height in confined conditions is a different skill to general forklift operation, and it takes time to develop.
Because of that specialisation, reach truck certification is valued highly by employers in distribution and large-scale warehousing. Operators who hold both counterbalance and reach truck qualifications are particularly sought after, as they can cover a wider range of roles.
Reach truck training is not typically the right starting point for someone with no prior experience of operating a forklift. The demands of working at height in narrow spaces are better managed by someone who already has a grounding in forklift handling. Most people come to reach truck training after completing counterbalance or another entry-level qualification first.
Powered pallet truck (PPT) training
The powered pallet truck is a smaller machine than the counterbalance or reach truck. It moves pallets horizontally rather than lifting them to height, and is operated either by a pedestrian walking alongside it or, on a ride-on model, by an operator standing on a platform at the rear.
PPTs are found in virtually every warehouse, retail stockroom, and distribution environment. They are central to order picking operations – moving goods across a warehouse floor, replenishing shelves, and keeping stock flowing through busy facilities.
Of the main types of forklift courses, PPT training is generally the most accessible entry point for people new to the industry. The qualification is achievable quickly, is recognised by a broad range of employers, and gives people a genuine foothold in logistics work without requiring prior experience.
That said, PPT training is not simply a beginner’s exercise. Operating a powered pallet truck safely in a busy environment requires proper understanding of pedestrian awareness, load stability, and confined space manoeuvring. A machine moving at speed in a crowded stockroom is still a serious piece of equipment, and employers expect operators who have been properly trained.
So which course is right for you?
The best starting point depends on the kind of work you’re looking for and the environments you want to work in.
If you want the broadest possible range of employment options across the Midlands, counterbalance certification is the strongest foundation. It is recognised across the widest range of industries and provides the grounding to add further qualifications over time.
If you’re looking for the quickest route into a warehouse or retail logistics role, PPT training offers a fast, accessible starting point. Many people begin with PPT and progress to counterbalance or reach truck training once they’re in employment.
If you already have some warehouse experience and are looking to specialise or increase your earning potential, reach truck certification is worth considering – ideally after completing counterbalance training first.
It is also worth knowing that holding multiple qualifications makes you more attractive to employers. Building a portfolio of certifications over time is something many operators do, and each additional qualification opens up a wider range of roles.
