First Time Forklift Training? Why Being Nervous Might Make You a Better Operator

On the first morning of a novice course, you can usually spot the nervous ones. Quiet. Arms folded. Asking whether everyone else has done this before. (They usually haven’t.)

After more than 25 years of training forklift operators in Birmingham, here’s something that might surprise you: those nervous trainees often turn into some of the safest drivers we see.

This article is for anyone considering first time forklift training who’s worried they won’t be able to do it. It’s also for employers who want to know how to get the best out of new starters.

Nerves are normal

A forklift is a big, heavy machine. It steers differently from a car. It carries loads above your head. Being a bit wary of that is not a weakness. It’s common sense.

The people we worry about aren’t the nervous ones. They’re the ones who walk in convinced they already know it all. Overconfidence leads to shortcuts: going too fast, skipping checks, lifting a load that isn’t quite secure. Those are the habits that cause accidents.

Someone who is a little nervous tends to slow down, listen and check. Those are exactly the habits good training is trying to build.

What people are really worried about

When trainees tell us they’re nervous, it’s rarely about the truck itself. It’s usually one of these:

  • “I’ll look stupid in front of everyone.” Everyone on a novice course is learning. Nobody arrives knowing how to do it.

  • “I’m too old to learn something new.” We train people of all ages, including career changers who haven’t been in a classroom for decades. Age isn’t the barrier people think it is.

  • “I’m not good at tests.” The assessment checks that you can operate safely. It isn’t there to catch you out, and you’ll know what’s coming well before it happens.

  • “My English isn’t perfect.” Tell us before you book. We’ll explain what to expect and make sure you’re not left behind.

  • “I can’t afford to fail.” For many people, this course is tied to a job. That pressure is real, and we take it seriously.

Naming the worry helps. Once it’s out in the open, it’s much easier to deal with.

How good training turns nerves into confidence

Confidence doesn’t come from being told you’ll be fine. It comes from doing something, doing it again, and seeing that you can.

That’s why the way a course is run matters as much as what’s in it. In our experience, the things that make the biggest difference are:

Small steps first. You don’t start by stacking pallets at height. You start by getting a feel for the controls, moving slowly in open space, and building up from there.

Plenty of seat time. Watching someone else drive only goes so far. Nerves settle fastest when your hands are on the controls.

Instructors who’ve seen it all. A good instructor can tell when someone needs a push and when they need a minute. Patience is part of the job.

Clear explanations of why. When you understand why a rule exists, such as why the forks stay low when travelling, it stops feeling like a list to memorise and starts making sense.

Honest feedback. Being told “that was good, now let’s tighten up your turning” builds more confidence than empty praise.

The “click” moment

Almost every trainee has one. It might be the first clean lift, the first tight turn, or the first time they put a pallet exactly where they meant to. Something clicks, and you can see the change in how they sit in the seat.

It’s one of the best parts of the job. And it’s why we’d tell anyone who’s nervous to give it a go: the click moment is coming, even if you can’t imagine it yet.

What this means for employers

If you’re bringing in new operators, especially for a busy period like peak season, it’s worth thinking about confidence as well as competence.

A new starter who has passed their course but is still a little cautious is not a problem. That caution is useful. What helps is giving them time to settle on site, pairing them with an experienced colleague for their first shifts, and making it easy to ask questions.

What doesn’t help is pressuring someone to go faster before they’re ready. That’s when the good habits from training start to slip.

Refresher training also has a role here. Experienced operators can drift into bad habits over time. A refresher resets those habits and reminds everyone why the rules exist.

If you’re thinking about it, but not sure

Here’s our honest advice:

  1. Talk to us first. Tell us what’s worrying you. We’ll tell you what the course involves, day by day.

  2. Start with the right course. If you’ve never driven a forklift, a novice course is where you belong. There’s no shame in starting at the beginning.

  3. Come with questions. The trainees who ask the most questions usually do the best.

  4. Give yourself credit. Deciding to learn something new, especially later in life or after a tough time, takes guts.

Being nervous doesn’t mean you’re not cut out for this. Often it means you’re taking it seriously, and that’s exactly what a good forklift operator does.
