Ready for Peak Season? What Birmingham's Warehouses Need to Know This Autumn
Autumn officially arrived on 23 September this year: the equinox, when day and night sit almost exactly equal before the nights start drawing in properly. For most people, it’s a seasonal marker and not much else. For anyone running a warehouse or logistics operation in the Midlands, it’s something closer to a starting gun. From October through to Christmas, order volumes climb steadily, and the operators who keep that machinery moving become one of the hardest roles to fill at exactly the moment you need them most.

This piece is about why that gap keeps opening up, and what’s actually worth doing about it before peak season hits properly.
The skills gap is real, and it’s not closing on its own
The logistics and warehousing sector has talked about a skills gap for years, but the pressure behind it hasn’t eased. Warehousing capacity across the Midlands has grown substantially as e-commerce has expanded, while the pipeline of newly qualified operators hasn’t kept pace. At the same time, an ageing workforce means experienced operators are retiring faster than they’re being replaced, and fewer school and college leavers are being actively pointed toward logistics as a career path compared to more heavily promoted routes like university or traditional apprenticeships.
The result is a sector that’s structurally short of trained people, not just seasonally short. Peak season simply exposes the gap that exists year-round.
Why “we’ll just hire more people” doesn’t solve it
The instinctive response to a staffing crunch is to hire more people, but headcount and competency aren’t the same thing. Putting an untrained or under-trained operator on a forklift in a busy warehouse during peak season isn’t just a safety risk. It’s a productivity risk, an insurance risk, and, if something goes wrong, a liability risk that can cost far more than the training would have. RTITB accreditation exists precisely because “someone who’s driven one before” and “someone who’s been properly assessed against a national standard” are not interchangeable, however similar they look on a rota.
The warehouses that come through peak season smoothly tend to be the ones that treated training as a September problem, not a November panic.
Evolving safety standards are raising the bar, not lowering it
There’s a persistent assumption that automation and smarter warehouse technology will eventually reduce the need for trained human operators. In practice, the opposite is happening in the short-to-medium term. As warehouses introduce automated guided vehicles, smart racking, and more complex mixed-use layouts combining automated and manual operations, the human operators working alongside that technology need to be more skilled, not less: understanding how to work safely around automated systems, handle the awkward loads and edge cases automation still can’t manage, and adapt to layouts that change more frequently than they used to.
Regulatory and insurance expectations are moving in the same direction. Refresher training, once treated as optional or reactive (something you did after an incident), is increasingly expected as standard practice every three to five years regardless of an operator’s record. Employers who treat refresher training as a box-ticking formality rather than a genuine skills update are likely to find themselves increasingly out of step with both insurers and best practice.
What employers can realistically do before peak season
The window between now and late October is the practical opportunity to get ahead of the seasonal squeeze. A few things make a measurable difference: booking group training sessions now rather than waiting until existing staff are already stretched thin; considering on-site training if moving staff off-site for a full day isn’t feasible; cross-training existing operators onto a second machine type (Reach Truck alongside Counterbalance, for instance) to build flexibility into the existing team rather than relying purely on new hires; and treating refresher training for longer-serving operators as a genuine safety investment rather than a formality to defer.
None of these are radical ideas. What they have in common is that they all take weeks to arrange properly, which is exactly why late September and early October, not November, is the point at which they need to start.
The bigger picture
Peak season staffing pressure isn’t going away, and it isn’t really a seasonal problem so much as a structural one that becomes most visible in autumn. Warehouses that build a relationship with a training provider they trust, and treat operator training as ongoing infrastructure rather than a one-off cost, consistently handle the October-to-December surge with less disruption than those scrambling to react to it.
