Why a Forklift Licence Looks Great on Your CV

Leaving college or sixth form and not sure what’s next? You’re not alone, and you don’t need a five-year plan to make a smart move right now. One of the simplest ways to strengthen your CV this summer is a forklift licence, and it’s more accessible than most people realise.

At DW Forklift Training, we’ve spent over 25 years training people across the Midlands, from complete beginners to experienced operators looking to add a new qualification. A growing number of those beginners are 18 and over and have just finished college or sixth form, looking for something practical, recognised, and useful, without committing to a full career path straight away.

What a Forklift Licence Actually Is

There’s no such thing as an official “forklift licence” in the legal sense. What you actually get is a certificate of basic training, issued once you’ve completed a recognised course and passed both the practical and written assessments. Most people call it a licence because it’s easier, and employers understand it the same way.

The important part is that it’s a real, RTITB accredited qualification. It shows that you’ve been trained to operate a forklift safely, that you understand the theory behind safe loading and manoeuvring, and that you’ve been assessed and passed. That’s something you can put on a CV with confidence, even if you’ve never had a job before.

Why It Stands Out on a CV With No Work Experience

If you’re applying for your first job, your CV probably looks a bit thin compared to someone with years of experience. That’s normal, everyone starts somewhere. But a forklift licence changes the shape of that CV.

Instead of a list of qualifications and not much else, you’ve got a practical, work-ready qualification that employers in warehousing, logistics, manufacturing, and retail distribution actually look for. It tells an employer that you can be trained quickly, that you’ve already shown up and completed a course, and that you’re ready to be useful from day one rather than needing months of induction.

For college and sixth form leavers specifically, it’s often the first thing on a CV that looks like it belongs on an adult’s CV rather than a student’s.

It Fits Around Further Study or a Gap Year

One of the most common questions we get is whether a forklift course fits around studying. For most people, the answer is yes.

Many college courses and university degrees only run a few days a week, leaving free days that could be used productively. A forklift course can typically be completed in a matter of days, which means it’s realistic to fit it in during a break between courses, the summer, or a gap year.

Once you’re certified, that qualification doesn’t expire in the way a temporary skill might. It stays on your CV and stays relevant, whether you use it for a part-time job alongside your studies or come back to it later when you’re looking for full-time work.

You Don’t Need to Know What You Want to Do Yet

Not everyone leaving college or sixth form has a clear plan, and that’s completely fine. University isn’t the right path for everyone, and there’s nothing wrong with taking a more practical route while you figure things out.

A forklift licence doesn’t lock you into anything. It’s simply a useful qualification to have. Some people use it to get a part-time job alongside other plans. Some use it as a stepping stone into a full-time logistics role. Others add it to a CV that’s mostly focused on a completely different career, just because it shows they’re proactive and capable of learning practical skills.

The point is that it’s something concrete you can do now, while keeping your options open for later.

What the Course Actually Involves

At DW Forklift Training, our courses combine classroom learning with hands-on practical training. You’ll cover the basics of safe operation, pre-use inspections, and the theory behind load stability and manoeuvring, before moving on to practical training and a final assessment.

No previous experience is needed. Our instructors work with people who have never sat in a forklift before, and the course is structured to build your confidence step by step, right up to your test. Trainees must be 18 or over to take part.

We offer training across our Birmingham centre and via on-site training across the Midlands, covering Wolverhampton, Coventry, Leicester, Northampton, and Nottingham.

Counterbalance, Reach Truck, or PPT, Which One?

For most people just starting out, Counterbalance Training is the most useful first qualification. It’s the most widely used type of forklift across different industries, so it opens the door to the widest range of roles.

Powered Pallet Truck (PPT) training is a slightly smaller commitment and a good entry point if you want something quick and straightforward. Reach Truck Training is more specialised and tends to suit people who already have some experience or are looking to add a second qualification to stand out further.

If you’re not sure which is right for you, that’s a normal question, and it’s one our team can talk through with you.

A Practical First Step

Leaving college or sixth form often comes with a lot of pressure to know exactly what comes next. The truth is, most people don’t, and that’s okay. What helps is having something practical to show for your time, something that demonstrates you’re ready to work and willing to learn.

A forklift licence does exactly that. It’s quick to achieve, it’s recognised across the logistics and warehousing sector, and it gives your CV something solid, whatever you decide to do next.
